Ethos and Sustainability

Our Makers

We’re passionate and committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with
the production process being slow and non-mass produced which takes into consideration all aspects of the supply chain and in doing so continues to uphold intentional lifestyles for everyone involved.

We have proudly partnered with a team of like-minded skilled artisans in Bali, Indonesia, who share our brand values and ethos.
Together, we create timeless and feminine designs, in premium, natural fabrications that are both breathable and luxurious to wear.
We stand for relaxed, effortless style, with easy-to-wear pieces that can be worn and loved season after season.
With a sense of wonder and adventure in every collection, Carlabella brings a little magic to everyday dressing.

When developing a prototype in the Bali Curator Studio, the steps which take to complete a collection includes; design sketch from paper to making digital tech packs, fabric and trim sourcing, dye/print tests, label/hangtag development, pattern making, sample cutting and sewing and of course consultation from our team.  Once the prototypes are confirmed, the pre-production begins which includes the preparation of the materials(dyeing or printing, or weaving the fabrics if working with handwoven fabrics), followed by production and ending with quality control and shipment.

Our Fabrications

An important step in the design process is fabric and trim sourcing, which will further develop the envisioned styles based on the available materials and production methods that are available on the island.

At the Bali Curator Studio we create styles that are made from woven fabrics, made of natural fibres, such as Linen and Tencel.  Bali does not have any fabric mills, so all the machine-made fabrics that you can find at the suppliers in Bali are either made in mills on other islands in Indonesia or imported from other countries.

Our 100% Linen fabric collections made with our partners The Bali Curator, in  Bali include:

  • Our OEKO-TEX standard flax is free from harmful chemicals, is organic and has been grown and processed in France. It is stonewashed mechanically with pumice stones for six hours for softness and is strictly tested and vouched for the quality. It is soft as can be, only getting better with wear.
  • Our Linen Crinkle fabric content is 100% linen.  The synthetic dye supplier is using 4 filters for the washed water before it is disposed of, ensuring no hazardous chemicals into waterways.

Our TENCEL™ fabric collections made with our partners Tokoencit, in Bandung, Indonesia include:
  • Our Euca Voille TENCEL™  fabric is a lightweight super soft fabric made from 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell, weaved and produced locally in Indonesia. Perfect choice for your Spring Summer wardrobe.
  • Our Medium weight plain weave TENCEL™ Euca Super is the most versatile fabric from all Euca and Lyco Series.  Ideal for your Spring and Autumn wardrobe.
Why  TENCEL™?

TENCEL™ has excellent moisture management. It absorbs moisture completely and naturally and then releases it to the outside leaving the fabric surface always in dry condition, thus bacteria can not grow.
The fibril along TENCEL™  fibre makes it super soft next to skin, ideal for people with sensitive skin.
Our curated certified TENCEL™  fabric is made from Eucalyptus wood in a closed loop process, contributing to the circular economy in the textile industry.

Lenzing fibres are derived from certified renewable wood sources using an eco-responsible production process that generates up to 50% lower emissions and water impact compared to generic Viscose.
It is easy to identify TENCEL™ fibres.  You just need to discern their exceptional, naturally soft, smooth and soothing cool feeling on the skin.

Our signature prints are screen printed using low-impact inks from Oeko Tex Standard Factory by our partners Tokoencit in Bandung, Indonesia.  Their craftsmanship is exquisite. The process is all done by hand.  A stencil design is printed directly onto the fabric using a mesh screen. With a sustainable approach, we only print what is needed in small batch by minimising textile waste.

Our Impact

Every year, an estimated 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide.  We choose to use compostable and biodegradable, Avani Bio-cassava bags which are a bio-based alternative that becomes the ideal replacement to petroleum-based plastic bags.
We ship our items in compostable mailers applied with compostable shipping labels supplied by The Better Packaging Co. and garments are protected with recycled tissue paper.

"My favourite thing about Bali is its warm and friendly people and their devotional way of life with daily ritual being of highest priority and the essence of how we produce Carlabella with a slow and sustainable approach to manufacturing.
I personally ensure that the artisans and suppliers have a voice when it comes to timelines, methods and prices and treat them respectfully as equal partners.
I look forward to yearly visits to see my team and in between the regular follow ups and meetings over zoom and email with my production co-ordinators.
Carlabella is aware of our fashion footprint and committed to designing bold and colourful garments embodying creative, unique and timeless style on the foundation that we tread lightly and intentionally with the utmost respect for people and the planet."
